(Note: The concrete details below depend on a project application which is still being reviewed.)
Sustainable language technology for Nordic minority languages
This project aims to support the development of sustainable language technology for Nordic minority languages through education within the FST (finite stat transducer)and CG (constraint grammar) formalisms.
Project overview
The project organises two four-day workshops combining introductory training and advanced instruction:
- Workshop 1: April 2027, Tromsø, Norway
- Workshop 2: September 2027, Nuuk, Greenland
The workshops are part of a long-term Nordic cooperation to ensure continuity in language technology development as senior experts retire and new developers are trained.
Activities
Project activities include:
- A preparatory phase to ensure project participants have basic knowledge, computational tools and access to relevant computers in place
- Two in-person workshops on FST and CG
- Development and improvement of language technology tools
- Publication and dissemination of results to both academic and language communities
Expected outcomes
The project aims to:
- Train new language technology developers, and provide a space to further hone the skills of already advanced language technology developers within FST and CG
- Improve existing language models and proofing tools and release new tools for end-users
- Strengthen the Nordic developer community that is working with CG and FST
All tools and resources developed within the project will be made freely available through the GiellaLT infrastructure, which can be acessed here, the source code is here.
